He asked me a couple of questions on TechNet, namely the TechNet Forums, TechNet TechCenters, TechNet Edge and the TechNet Wiki.

Philip posted the (edited) video on TechNet Edge, earlier this week.

The video is only 5 minutes long, so it’s not a terrible waste of your time.

Videos of Active Directory-related sessions at Tech·Ed Europe 2010

Below you’ll find links to the videos of all Active Directory-related sessions of Tech·Ed Europe 2010:

While my calendar was filled with dinners and parties every night and I haven’t seen my hotel bed before 3 AM, I did attend a couple of 9 AM sessions.

Most of my sessions revolved around identity, identity federation and more mainstream Active Directory topics. With sessions hosted by German speakers and a friend linking to 160 Greatest Arnold Schwarzenegger Quotes on Facebook, no wonder I had to think about ‘ze klauwd’.

I can actually hear him say it in my head.

TEE2010 in Pictures: Jamaican Country Drinks

Today I got invited to the Swedish Country Drinks at Club Solar.
This year, at Tech·Ed Europe, I feel I’m hanging out at the MVP booth a lot, helping out Evelyn Ruf, Katrin Letzel and William Jansen. That’s a lot of fun.

Since this is not my first Tech·Ed and not my first conference, by now, I come prepared. Since being an MVP is about sharing, in this post I’ll share the stuff that I take with me in my bag and the choices I make, whenever I go to a convention. You may benefit from this information when you go to your first Tech·Ed or MVP Summit…

Choices

Room sharing

Last year during Tech·Ed I wrote:

“Next time your boss tells you to share a room, don’t get mad. Get drunk. ;-)”

Every year, this opinion grows stronger. At every conference I try to do something fun every night. Whether it’s having dinner with some Microsoft Product Team guys, a Tech·Ed Country Drinks or just hanging out with my local Microsoft DPE guys. I tend to drink. Wine, beer, cognac, champagne…

But, after a night out, I need to find a bed. I need to be able to get to my hotel room and for that I typically need to operate an elevator, open a hotel door, get off my shoes, etc. Some times, I can’t really do that anymore. And that’s when the concept of room sharing steps in.

This year, as an experiment, I’m sharing a room with two colleagues. Not one, two. So far I’m liking the concept. Of course, the amount of guys in one room in their underpants doubles, but at least this year I have a redundant ‘get me to the hotel’ service.

Equipment

Wireless router

European hotel rooms tend to offer Internet Access. Most hotels offer Wi-Fi nowadays and some offer both a wireless and wired connection. In most cases you will need to provide a cryptic username and password combination to gain access to the Internet. This access, typically, is then bound to the MAC address of the device you entered the credentials on. This way, you cannot share and reuse the key on another computer. The binding often only lasts five minutes when you’re inactive, after which you can enter the credentials on another computer.

I bring a wireless router with me. It’s an old piece of hardware, but at least it’s capable of WPA encryption. I typically connect this device and use it to share Internet Access. Since it’s a NAT device it will make the credentials bind to its MAC address. I’ve been to many conventions, and this device always made me and my roommate(s) happy.

RFID card

You know those hotel rooms that need the hotel room key (a card) stuck into a wall mount next to the door to be able to turn on lights and get power? These things usually just rely on the RFID tag inside the card. But, honestly, the outlet itself does not read the RFID tag, it merely detects it. You can plug in any RFID card and have power while you’re gone. This year we used Dave’s Dutch Dynabyte Customer card. A Dutch Public Transportation card will also do nicely.

Power strip

I also, always, bring a power strip or Power Distribution Unit (PDU). I found one in a local shop with ten power outlets. Typically in a hotel room there’s only a couple of power outlets. Being a geek, I bring two laptops, two mobile phones, and of course, the wireless router. When these things need to charge, It takes up to five power outlets. That’s even without the equipment my room mate(s) want to charge and use!

Especially, when travelling outside Europe, the power outlet layout changes. In the US power outlets look like a little face, and European stuff can’t be plugged in. Luckily, though, all my equipment is capable of operating on 110V. All I need to do to be able to get some power, is plug in the power bar, using one converter. This eliminates the hassle of bringing a lot of converters with me.

My power strip also features an on/off switch with a nice light when it’s switched on. This allows me to see in a glance whether the power is still on in the room.

TEE2010 in Pictures: Windows Phone 7

Together with Dave Stork and Roland Zenhorst (two colleagues from OGD), I’m heading for a week of fun, related to Tech·Ed Europe 2010.

We were scheduled to depart at 0945 (that’s 9:45 AM), but boarding has been delayed, because one of the wheels of the plane (PH-EZ0) needed replacing. This delay, and a quick triple espresso, present a moment to blog. I hope to be as lucky the rest of the week, but I’m sure I’ll be busy enough travelling and partying.

In between parties I’ll try and attend some sessions. In my last post I already mentioned Active Directory sessions of interest, so you’re bound to meet me there.

Now, it’s time for launch… and lunch

Active Directory-related sessions at Tech·Ed Europe 2010
I’m attending Tech·Ed Europe 2010, are you?

Active Directory-related sessions at Tech·Ed Europe 2010

Tech·Ed Europe 2010 is only a few weeks away and many of us have begun filling their session builder with interesting sessions, corresponding to their interests and knowledge.

Following Hans’ example, I decided to compile a list of the Active Directory and Group Policy related sessions at Tech·Ed Europe 2010.

I’ve compiled the list below, divided per Tech·Ed session type and arranged by date:

Breakout Sessions

When your goal at Tech·Ed is to learn about the different Active Directory technologies and Group Policy topics, breakout sessions offer the most bang for your buck. In one hour time Speakers will show these technologies with presentations and demos. Lunchtime sessions are a special kind of breakout sessions; they are shorter in time. It is simple to establish that trust when Active Directory Windows authentication is used. And if the application needs further identity information about the user in order to qualify its response, the additional properties can be read from the Active Directory.
When the application resides outside your realm, maybe in the Cloud or within a partner organization, how do we establish trust? This is where Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS) provides a method of linking trust between disparate parties. One organization authenticates the user and creates an industry standard token that contains the Identity of the user in the form of claims. The receiving organization accepts the user’s identity and responds with the appropriate resources because of the established trust. Come to this deep dive, demo rich session and learn how to setup and leverage the true power of ADFS v2.

SIA313 Cloud Security: The Practical Meaning of Security, Identity and Access Revealed!
Thursday, November 11 | 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM, Track: Security, Identity & Access
Speaker(s): Brjann Brekkan, Paula Januszkiewicz, Tomasz Onyszko
Featuring a DirTeam blogger as speaker!

The CLOUD is coming. But let’s face it, you must have asked yourself if it possible to hack the claims? How can we prevent this? One thing is sure: moving from on-premises applications to the cloud is like moving from a home generator to the electricity grid. We put our trust in the external identity providers, but are we really sure that all of the security issues have been addressed? We focus on the application in the cloud, but is this really the application that we need to protect? New solutions bring new possible attack vectors, and not only from the outside! Come and see what can happen when the users, or even the administrators, become the bad guys. During this intensive and extremely practical session, presenters will guide you through the threats and challenges related to the industry standard- based services delivered by ADFS v2. Only real-life scenarios! Many practical demos!

SIA318 Windows Identity Framework in the Real World
Thursday, November 11 | 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM, Track: Security, Identity & Access
Speaker(s): Jesus Rodriguez

Are you wondering how customers are adopting Windows Identity Foundation (WIF) in the real world? What challenges do they face? What solutions are they implementing? This session presents a series of best practices collected, and lessons learned, during the implementation of large WIF solutions in the real world.
We have included a series of practical demonstrations that illustrate how to address important aspects of WIF-based solutions, such as monitoring, scalability, testing, and claim and record management, among many others. Additionally, we will present three case studies that demonstrate how customers are leveraging these solutions to facilitate the implementation of WIF in the enterprise.

SIA401 All You Need to Know about Certificates from Templates to Revocation
Friday, November 12 | 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM, Track: Security, Identity & Access
Speaker(s): John Craddock

As the requirement for certificates proliferates with the introduction of smartcards, HTTPS, IPSec, NAP and DirectAccess, customers are suffering through a lack of understanding of PKI, certificate templates, deployment and revocation.
This highly pragmatic session, based on field experience, will alleviate the pain! If you don’t currently have a Public Key Infrastructure, or have one in place and are not completely comfortable with how certificates really work, then this demo rich session is for you.
