Yesterday, the Dutch Networking User Group organized the Tablet Day at the Reehorst in Ede, the Netherlands. Dave and I presented a 45-minute session on device management through ActiveSync. The whole day was packed with sessions from many speakers and it was a great success with good drinks and a dinner afterwards.

Some people took pictures during our session, so I thought of sharing some of them with you in this blogpost.

We had a big room with nice natural lighting, that felt like a breath of fresh air in contrast to the main auditorium of the Reehorst. The room was filled with 150 seats and, as you can see in the picture below, the majority of them were used by people attending our session:

Since this was the third time Dave and I presented on the topic, we felt pretty confident and had a lot of fun discussing the IOS 6.1 ActiveSync bug, the effects of ActiveSync settings on various tablet and phone models and the missing Swipe Password API on Android-based devices:

I will be speaking at the UK VMUG Meeting in London

I just received confirmation on speaking at the UK Virtual Machine User Group (VMUG) Meeting in the Hilton Doubletree hotel in London on Tuesday May 21, 2013.

I will be delivering my session on virtualization-safe(r) Active Directory and Domain Controller Cloning. The same session I have been delivering for the past year at numerous events, including the Dutch 2013 Microsoft TechDays.

About the UK Virtual Machine User Group

The UK Virtual Machine User Group (VMUG) is an association of persons with a vested interest in the successful deployment of virtual infrastructure and their associated technologies.

The committee are all volunteers and are directly employed to manage and design virtual infrastructure in their organizations.

VMUG UK is the largest independent cloud and virtualization user group in the UK. As a user group, run by administrators and architects of virtualized systems, the VMUG is all about the contents in the presentations at their events, meeting like minded engineers and learning about new products and trends.

In contrast to other VMUGs, the UK VMUG has a broader view on virtualization than most VMUGs, who mostly focus on VMware-only virtualization.

About the London Meeting

The London meeting will take place from 9AM to 4PM on May 21, 2013 at the Hilton Doubletree hotel.

The meeting is packed with presentations from Microsoft, VMware, York University, EG Innovations and Verizon. Also, attendees will be able to discover VMware automation in the available lab environment. Behind the scenes of the ICT Expert Talks

At the Dutch Microsoft TechDays, my employer introduced ICT Expert Talks: a professional film booth, where we interviewed speakers, attendees and staff. You can find these interviews on YouTube in the ICT Expert Talks channel. In this blogpost, I’ll provide a peak behind the scenes of these interviews, the people involved, technology we used and fun we had.

Joeri Pruys

Creating thirty interviews in two days is no simple feat. Joeri Pruys is a marketeer at OGD and a professional film maker in his spare time. Watch his short films on the website of Roundhay Garden Scene to enjoy his skills and get excited about his full film Habitat. Joeri designed most of the booth and operated the cameras to make sure people were in the perfect picture all the time:

Joep van der Zijden & Raymond Comvalius

Joep van der Zijden is our copywriter at OGD and has lend his voice to the latest radio commercials our company did. My buddy Raymond was involved through the Dutch Networking User Group (NGN). Joep performed most of the one-minute interviews and our landmark interview with David Chappell. Raymond did all the longer and more technical interviews with the speakers.

Joep and Raymond were our interviewers and they both did a fantastic job!

Martijn Vinke

Martijn Vinke is the brains behind the operation and also a marketeer at OGD. He came up with the concept for the ICT Expert Talks and made it all happen. As the proud content owner, we could no longer beat the smile off his face on Day 2…

Technology

From a technology point of view Ivo van der Pas Jr. (also a colleague at OGD) worked the videos, made the cuts and uploaded the files to YouTube. Of course, all the equipment was running Windows.

Ivo made sure our 1-minute videos were on YouTube five minutes after the interview. Barely sufficient time to drink a cup of coffee…

Pictures of the Dutch 2013 TechDays

Last week, Microsoft Netherlands organized the 2013 TechDays at the World Forum in The Hague, where both Developers and IT Professionals enjoyed two days of sessions, networking opportunities and catering.

On March 6th, I visited the event space, together with Raymond Comvalius. We explored the venue, checked out the film booth my employer had set up and met up with Christian van Woerkom and Vivian Andringa.

On March 7th, the first day of the main event, the first item on my schedule was my session “Two of a kind: Virtualization safe(r) Active Directory and Domain Controller Cloning” from 9:15AM to 10:30AM in room Everest.

After my session, I dumped my stuff in the speaker room and headed for the Genius Bar. This year, the Dutch TechDays event featured a Genius Bar with six touchscreens. A lot of my buddies were there and William Jansen and I took a couple of pictures:

The rest of the day, I divided my time between the Genius Bar, the ICT Expert Talks (more on that in my next blog post) and the IT Pro Keynote with Tony Krijnen and David Chappell:

I completed a series of interviews with the highest ranking Dutch people on the Microsoft Virtual Academy (including me)

As you might know, I work together with the fantastic people at the Dutch Microsoft subsidiary in a team to help them achieve the maximum amplification of their IT Professionals content. One of the goals we set, was to get people to use the Microsoft Virtual Academy (MVA).

Microsofts Virtual Academy allows you to get up to speed fast with Microsofts newest technologies and products through free courses in an awesome web-based format, including ranking per country and timeframe. Points can be earned with every webpage visited, video watched, event attended, assessment taken and course completed.

Since I was one of the earliest Dutch people using the Microsoft Virtual Academy, I’ve seen people move into ranking positions. I thought it would be fun to get to know the highest ranking Dutch people on the Virtual Academy, and so I proposed to interview them for the Dutch Microsoft TechNet newsletter. Dutch In the past three months I have travelled through the Netherlands to meet the five highest ranking Dutch students and to get them to tell something about themselves and the Microsoft Virtual Academy.

Adnan Hendricks

For the first interview, I choose someone who was geographically close to me. In this case, the person was sitting at the opposite side of the same desk at my employer. At the time of our interview (December 2012) Ad Hendricks was the highest ranked student in the Microsoft Virtual Academy. The TechNet newsletter that featured his interview was about Windows 8, so in our interview we focused on the new deployment features and, of course, the Virtual Academy. Patrick Keijzer

The second person I interviewed also was someone I’ve known for quite a while. Patrick Keijzer used to be a colleague for years, before he moved on to globally roll out Lync to thousands of seats at a large international company. The TechNet newsletter with this interview had a lot of Office content, so Patrick and I chatted about Office and the Virtual Academy in this interview. Patrick clearly outlines how the Virtual Academy helps him to keep connected to new technology when your daily tasks have evolved into (project) management. James Olaniyi

After the usual suspects, I went to see James T. Olaniyi. Working at the Dutch Ministry of Finance, James uses the Virtual Academy to boost his technical knowledge on Microsoft technologies to provide the best business advice on how to implement these. Frank Kurvers

In the time between the first interview and the interview with Frank Kurvers, Frank overtook Ad as the highest ranking student. I met up with Frank at his employer and we talked for almost 8 minutes on System Center Operations Manager. The first four interviews were recorded with a Røde microphone. Unfortunately this microphone was unavailable for the last interview. This interview was recorded with my Nokia Lumia 920. I can’t hear a difference in sound quality…
All interviews are recorded in one take. In the interview with Frank Kurvers the volume of Franks voice was cranked up. This was the only edit deemed necessary.

About TechDays NL 2013

TechDays is an international series of Microsoft events, hosted by Microsoft subsidiaries around the world. Microsoft Netherlands, this year, has decided to make the event a 2-day event, filled with both IT Professionals and Developers content.

Together with the Belgian subsidiary, which is running the Belgian TechDays event on March 6 and March 7, 2013 at the Kinepolis filmtheatre in Antwerpen, Microsoft Netherlands has arranged for several highly rated international speakers, like John Craddock, Bryon Surace, Chris Jackson, Daniel Pearson,Johan Arwidmark, Vijay Tewari and Paula Januszkiewicz to present sessions, next to our own heroes Maarten Goet, Ronald Beekelaar, Ruben Spruijt, Steven van Houttum, Jeff Wouters, Kenneth van Surksum, Roel van Bueren and Alex De Jong.

About my session

My session, titled ‘Two of a kind: Virtualization-safe Active Directory & DC Cloning’ is a one-hour session on Active Directory Domain Services in Windows Server 2012. Specifically, I will be explaining and demoing the way Active Directory Domain Services leverage VMGeneration-ID to prevent problems commonly associated with reverting snapshots, like USN Rollbacks and Lingering Objects, and how organizations benefit when deploying Windows Server 2012-based Domain Controller virtually.

My session is planned in the first timeslot of the event, on March 7, 2013 between 9:15 AM and 10:30 AM.

Test: Real vs. Rogue

Millions of Windows PCs are infected by scareware each year. Often, this kind of software fakes to be an anti-malware program. These rogue virus scanners convince Windows users their PC is infected and they need to pay to clean it.

Microsofts free Security Essentials with its 10-15% market share, ForeFront Endpoint Protection, System Center Endpoint Protection and the built-in Action Center and Windows Defender are often mimicked.

Now, Microsoft fights back these layer 8 attacks by offering the Real vs. Rogue test on Facebook. When you do the test, you’ll be shown 10 screenshots of anti-malware and two radio buttons labeled Real and Rogue.

As announced in an earlier blogpost, I hosted a Microsoft Netherlands Datacenter Virtualization IT Camp with Tony Krijnen on December 11, 2012. We had a lot of fun and in this blogpost I’ll try and share some of the fun.

During the Datacenter Virtualization IT Camps, IT Pro attendees, work their way through a series of exercises to explore a few of the possibilities of the new Windows Server 2012 Operating System, with the main focus on what’s new in Hyper-V 3.0.

The labs were categorized into groups covering the server infrastructure, new Windows Server 2012 functionality and the new features in Hyper-V virtualization. In the final lab a Failover cluster is featured. The first part of the labs could be done individually by the attendees on their own laptops (which we politely asked to bring), but for the second part they needed to team up with a fellow IT Pro attendee to join their machines and do labs together and perform Shared Nothing Live Migrations, and the like.

The room was arranged in a cabaret meets classroom style with tables. Tables were set with two seats, but attendees quickly changed some of the prearranged seating to their needs. The room was packed:

Since the venue was a hotel, lunch was fantastic!

After lunch, I gave my presentation on Domain Controller Cloning with Windows Server 2012. It had been 8 months, since I gave that presentation (last time was at the Dutch OS Day), so I had to do some work on the slides. Also, this was the first time I performed this demo on Windows 8 as the virtualization host. As it turns out, even Hyper-V on the client supports VMGeneration-ID, so my Domain Controller cloned without a hitch.

At the end of the day, Tony demoed his 2-node Hyper-V cluster, based on shared storage offered by a 3-node Scale-out File Server cluster. All his machines were running Windows Server 2012, of course.

Microsoft has been hosting Datacenter Virtualization IT Camps globally for the past few months. These no cost, hands-on technical training events for IT professionals have been a great success around the world.

Microsoft subsidiaries over the world have created their own event template and approach, ranging from invite-only and online-only to open-for-everyone and in-person.

Microsoft Netherlands has been hosting Datacenter Virtualization IT Camps since the spring of 2012 and their approach has been widely different to the approach taken by other subsidiaries: The approach by Daniel van Soest and Tony Krijnen, aimed at 1-day in-person events, has been to have people reuse their laptops as Hyper-V hosts using Boot from VHD technology and join them to an Active Directory domain, install the Hyper-V role, connect them to shared storage and then create Fail-over Clusters. The Dutch Datacenter Virtualization IT Camps have gathered numerous nicknames in the past months, including “Guinnes Book record attempts to create the largest Hyper-V Fail-over clusters in one day”.

After the release of Windows Server 2012, Microsoft Netherlands has been transferring their Datacenter Virtualization IT Camps from Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2012. Already, several Datacenter Virtualization IT Camps have been delivered in the past two months in Utrecht, Eindhoven and Veenendaal in this new format.

Earlier this month, a series of new dates for the Datacenter Virtualization IT Camps was announced, kicking off on Tuesday December 11, 2012 at the Van der Valk Hotel in Duiven from 10AM to 4PM.

I will be hosting the Microsoft Datacenter Virtualization IT Camp with Tony Krijnen at Van der Valk Duiven on Tuesday December 11, 2012.

Yesterday, Microsoft Netherlands organized a free event for roughly 800 members of the Microsoft Partner Network, where they launched Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012, together with Ingram Micro, Copaco, Actebis and Tech Data, and a lot of their OEM Partners like Dell, Samsung, HP, Asus, Acer, Toshiba and Fujitsu.

As I posted earlier, I was invited by Microsoft to present on this event on our experiences migrating to Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012, focusing both on making the most of Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 implementations and the cross- and upsell opportunities within the Microsoft Windows and Office families of products.

The event started with a keynote by Daniel van Soest and Tony Krijnen, followed by a 15-minute walkthrough of a Windows 8 device-wall by Marcel Nieuwpoort. People were standing in the back because the venue was packed (over 750 people attended) and people wanted to avoid missing anything from these two presentations:

After a short break, people were invited to the eight available 1-hour partner presentations and dive deeper sessions. Marcel Nieuwpoort (Microsoft) performed a session in dome 1 on the ‘3 screens and a cloud’ vision, Wouter Jansen (Microsoft) dove deeper in Windows 8 in dome 2, Jeffrey Vermeulen (Microsoft) told more about Windows Server 2012 and Hans van der Meer (Microsoft) showed off more of Office 2013. On the partner end, Rob Oud (Cad & Company) explained more about App Development, Peter Sterk (PQR) explained VDI, Micha Commeren (Resoluut) showed their Windows 8 apps and actually built an app on stage during his session and I presented on the experiences we had on deploying, managing and selling Windows 8 to customers in dome 8:

Together with Ingram Micro, Copaco, Actebis and Tech Data, Microsoft Netherlands organizes a free event on Thursday October 25, 2012 titled Objectives 2012. The venue for this event is Amstelborgh – Borchland in Amsterdam.

This event marks the launch of Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, Office 2013 and Office 365 for the Dutch Microsoft Partner Network.

Because my employer is on the forefront of deploying Windows 8, both within our company as with other companies, I was asked to deliver a series of one-hour break-out sessions during this event.

About Objectives 2012

Objectives is the yearly event for Dutch Microsoft Partners. The 2012 Objectives event focuses on Windows 8 and the new Office. During the day, approximately 650 people from the Dutch Microsoft Partner Network will learn the opportunities on the new wave of Microsoft software, services and hardware.

About my session

I’ll be presenting a one-hour session on migrating to Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012, focusing both on making the most of Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 implementations and the cross- and upsell opportunities within the Microsoft Windows and Office families of products.

Pictures of the Technical Track of the October 11 “Samen Slimmer” event

Yesterday was a special day. For the first time, my employer organized a customer event for over 300 people at the Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam on a piece of technology not even available mainstream. We dubbed the event “Samen Slimmer met Windows 8 en Windows Server 2012”, an event title that roughly translates to “Better Together with Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012”.

I was the technical content owner for this event.

This meant I designed the program, chartered colleagues as speakers, asked external speakers Daniel van Soest and Raymond Comvalius to help out, took care of an on-site Hyper-V-based demo environment, designed the demos and slides for the technical track, and communicated about the technical requirements with the venue.

Roel Nikkessen, our CEO, started the event with a short introduction.

Afterwards, Daniel van Soest and Marcel Nieuwpoort presented an awesome keynote on the integration advantages between the different members of the Windows family and how to manage Windows 8 in the enterprise:

After a short break I presented three sessions for approximately 2 hours. The first 45 minutes I interviewed six colleagues on their favorite “Better Together” features in Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012:

Each one, presented a small demo on their topic, which was a lot of fun.

The second 45 minutes session started with a 15-minute demo/comparison between System Center Configuration Manager 2012 (with Service Pack 1 Beta) and the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2012 with Update 1 by Rik van Berendonk and Rinko Rijnhout:

Then, I discussed the new Group Policies for Windows 8 with Roland Zenhorst. We specifically zoomed in on the Prohibit connection to roaming Mobile Broadband networks policy as part of a strategy avoid high bills for 3G/4G connected Windows 8 devices.

Together with Joost Koelman, we looked at App-V, which is part of the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack for Software Assurance (MDOP). This technology is used intensely in our cloud solution, called Officium. So I invited Maarten Jongepier, the manager of this offering and the first suit, on stage to pitch his platform as the ultimate platform to host legacy applications and bring the new Windows 8 interface to iPads and other android devices through Remote Desktop Services (RDS) and Citrix XenApp. Marien de Gelder, our software development manager and also wearing a suit for the occasion, came on stage next to show off our Windows 8-style Service Delivery Dashboard app, the first Windows 8 app we produced for customers:

To conclude the second session, Raymond Comvalius and I introduced the audience to the framework we developed in the last year, that helps people perform successful Windows migrations.

The third session was designed as a server virtualization platform battle between VMware’s vSphere 5.1 platform and the combination of Hyper-V in Windows Server 2012 and System Center 2012 (with Service Pack 1).

This highly energized session was the last session of the day. A good day.

On September 20, the Dutch Networking User Group (NGN) organized an event on Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012.

During this day, several speakers provides inspiration, information and guidance on implementing and managing Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012. Speakers at this event includes Ruben Spruijt, Raymond Comvalius, Alex de Jong, Roel van Bueren, Jeff Wouters and Erwin Derksen and me.

My session focused on the new Group Policy features that administrators can use to streamline their Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 environments. Topics included updating the Central Store, Group Policy remote updating and four real-world scenarios targeted by new Group Policy settings in Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012.

A new Directory Services MVP! (Morgan Dahl Simonsen)

On July 1, Morgan Dahl Simonsen was awarded with the 2012 Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) award for Directory Services.

The team behind the DirTeam.com / ActiveDir.org weblogs would like to congratulate him with this achievement and welcome him to the select group of Directory Services MVPs.

About Morgan Dahl Simonsen

Morgan Dahl Simonsen is a Senior IT advisor and consultant from Norway. On the picture below, from October 2008, he is depicted as the third guy from the left on the back row, just behind Steve Ballmer.
