Let's say your AD consists of only 32 bit W2K3 (SP1) DCs without R2. Now you want to introduce a 64 bit R2 DC. As you know, you need to extend the AD schema to support the R2 features. When using the 32 bit version of R2 you just fire up ADPREP from the 2nd CD et voila you're done! However, this is the 64 bit R2 distribution set and that one does not contain the 32 bit ADPREP version...What can you do?

  1. Download the 32 bit trial version of W2K3 R2 from the Microsoft site: Windows Server 2003 R2 Trial Software
    OR
  2. Just download a hotfix released by Microsoft: You cannot deploy a Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 Edition-based domain controller in a Windows Server 2003 forest

I would use (2). ;-)

Cheers,

Jorge
